4 Winds 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
4 Winds 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
4 Winds 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
The 2013 Cabernet exhibits decidedly less earth than the 2012. A notable freshness lingers upon opening, building to a bouquet that’s bursting with ripe dark berries, cassis and vanilla. Juicy flavors of ripe blackberry and bosenberry echo the nose, while santa rosa plum and chocolate emerge mid-palate. The bounty of ripe fruit is balanced by an integrated, ashy tannin making for a long finish. This inky, complex wine would pair stunningly with any espresso, cocoa, or rosemary rubbed beef. Its also the perfect companion to venison or lamb with a fruit-based sauce.

4 Winds Winery
Our family travels with the wind. West Coast. East Coast. Europe. Asia-Pacific. In the Stags Leap District we find the wild, volcanic legacy of the Palisades and the perfect climate for Cabernet Sauvignon. We’re digging in; establishing roots.

Founded by mother and son, Jane and Roy Chapin, the winery’s debut release is 4 Winds Cabernet by winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. With his long-awaited first foray into the Stags Leap District, Brown adds to the 4 Winds’ dedication to quality and collaboration. Like the Chapins, Brown is intrigued by the 109-acre estate’s hillside landscape, a “jewel box of a site” for making wine and planting vines for future vintages.

Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown

He’s known as a dynamo in Napa, this winemaker from the South who arrived in the valley in the 1990s to fill his life with wine and vines. Thomas Rivers Brown has since worked with more than a dozen wineries and vineyards, including his own Rivers-Marie on the Sonoma Coast. In 2010, Food & Wine magazine named him American winemaker of the year. At 4 Winds, we just happen to love his wine. After a first taste, winery founder Jane Chapin recalls thinking, “I don’t know whose wine this is, but this is the one. It went down like velvet.” The match between the Chapins and Brown would soon be made. For 4 Winds, Brown continues his philosophy of keeping the winemaking process as simple as possible. “Letting the site shine through is what’s important.”
