Behrens Family Winery 2013 Head in the Clouds Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

This exceptional wine has an otherworldy quality about it. Where else but in a beautifully complex wine can so many different flavors come together so seamlessly, to create a greater whole? Blackberry, cinnamon, white pepper and espresso lift from the glass aromatically, while flavors of mocha, plum and clove are all wrapped beautifully in the soft, yet persistent tannins, and finish with sassafras and cherry cola. Having oneís head in the clouds just might not be so bad, after all!

Vinous - 93 Points: "Black cherries, plum, smoke, mint, mocha and cloves are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2013 Head in the Clouds. Dark, racy and voluptuous, the 2013 is another wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The inclusion of 10% Cabernet Franc and the overall expression of fruit tends towards the darker, spicier side of things. Head in the Clouds emerges from a number of sites in Napa, Oak Knoll, Pritchard Hill and Pope Valley."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 93 Points: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Head in the Clouds is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest equal parts Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This is a beautiful blend, with loads of blueberry and blackberry fruit, an opaque purple color, a hint of acacia flowers and subtle background wood. Itís broad, savory and expansive. This is a beauty to drink over the next decade, and typifies the boisterous, hedonistic style of the Behrens wines."

You have to have great grapes to make great wine. That is our winemaking philosophy which began with the 1994 vintage when Les created his first "real" wines from Staglin and Inkgrade Vineyards both in the Napa Valley. Our first proprietary blend of Cuvee Lola was made in 1994 as well. Cuvee Lola was one lonely barrel that Les felt was just amazing wine, and he couldn't figure out what to do with it. He tried blending it into the other wines, but it got lost. Then he tried blending other wines into it, but they disguised the qualities he felt were so wonderful and unique about it. Finally, he decided to bottle it just the way it was and name it after his and Lisa's new baby girl, Lola.

This is how our philosophy, if you can call it that, of making small batches of handcrafted wines came to be. The vineyards really told Les how the wine should be made, and he has continued to follow that instinct - let the vineyard express its unique personality as a stand alone wine but make fun, inspired blends when that is what the wine wants.
