Description
Chappellet 2017 Cabernet Franc Napa Valley

One of the treasures of the Chappellet portfolio, this complex and concentrated Cabernet Franc showcases how beautifully this grape expresses itself when grown on the high-mountain slopes of Pritchard Hill. Offering a mosaic of fruit, herb and spice notes, it displays aromas of dark cherry, cassis, olive, and sage, as well as oak-inspired hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and clove. On the palate, it is supple and elegant, with plush tannins and luxurious flavors of black cherry, chocolate, graphite, cedar and roasted coffee gliding to a long, complex finish. Blend: 75% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot

"Lastly, the 2017 Cabernet Franc comes from Napa Valley (I'm not exactly sure where the fruit is from) and is all varietal. It's a more opulent wine than the Cabernet and has considerable fruit, richness, and depth on the palate, loads of dark, chocolaty fruit, and terrific notes of spring flowers, gravelly earth, forest floor, and hints of espresso. Beautifully done and balanced, with sweet tannins, it’s a beautiful wine."

James Suckling - 93 Points
"Lots of crushed-blackberry and floral aromas with raspberries, too. Very clear and bright. Full-bodied, dense and crisp with lots of fruit, yet it remains tight and toned. Some hot stones at the finish. Pretty big wine, but shows tension. Drink or hold."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 93 Points
"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Franc displays pronounced red and black cherries, mulberries and warm raspberries scents with underlying blueberries, pencil shavings and dried Provence herbs plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers mouth-filling red and blue fruits with a firm, grainy frame and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed."

The Winemaker

As Chappellet’s winemaker for nearly two decades, Phillip Corallo-Titus has guided the winery’s storied winemaking program, building on Chappellet’s legacy as one of California’s preeminent producers of Cabernet Sauvignon. A gifted winemaker with a passion for experimentation, Phillip has embraced the diversity of Pritchard Hill to craft benchmark wines that authentically express the terroir-inspired complexity and character of their mountain origins.

In the winery, he handles the grapes very gently and uses an array of fermentation, maceration and cellaring techniques to accentuate and preserve the distinctiveness of each varietal. "Because I’ve worked with our vineyards for so long and know each block so intimately, I am able to focus on the individual characteristics of each vineyard lot,” says Phillip. “This diversity allows us to enjoy a great deal of freedom during the blending process, while also adding immense depth and complexity to our wines.”

The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, is a stunner and one of the great, great 2014s. Inky purple with blueberry and blackberry fruit, cassis, licorice, graphite and white flowers, the wine is stunningly concentrated, full-bodied and seemingly one of the greatest of the 2014s. Still youthful, with at least 25-30 years of upside potential at the minimum, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050. (RP) (12/2016)

This shows great structure and muscle with a firm and flexing tone. Full-bodied, tight and reserved. Currants, black truffles and espresso. A classic structure that harks back to the great Chappellets of the 1970s. Savory. What length. Will improve with many years, but it's still a dream to drink now. (1/2017)

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill might turn out to be better than the 2013, as it has a bit more focus, delineation and energy. Although it is quite early, the 2014 offers superb potential. The flavors are intensely mineral and savory today, while the wine possesses magical translucence and tons of personality. The sample I tasted was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, but the final wine may included blenders. Winemaker Philip Corallo-Titus adds that 2014 is a low tannin vintage at Chappellet, so the wines spent a bit longer than normal on the skins. (AG) (10/2015)
