Description
Chappellet 2017 Singature Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been our flagship wine for more than three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and further elevates flavor complexity. A classic expression of hillside Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this luxurious and powerfully structured wine begins with aromas of ripe berry, cherry, cedar and cigar box, as well as notes of dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla and clove. On the palate, rich, but well-knit tannins, underscore silky berry liqueur flavors, carrying the wine to a lingering finish with hints of bay leaf and anise.

Vinous - 93 Points
"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is plump, racy and super-expressive. Raspberry jam, spice, mocha, blood orange and pomegranate are all given an extra kick of textural richness. Unctuous and bold, the 2017 offers tons of near- and medium-term appeal. This is a terrific effort. The Signature Cabernet remains one of the very best Napa Valley wines in its price range."

Jeb Dunnuck - 92 Points
"The larger production cuvée is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature, which checks in as 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 % Petit Verdot, and the balance Malbec. This cuvée is normally relatively easy to find in the market and it's always a good value. The 2017 doesn't break that trend, offering up loads of black and blue fruits intermixed with lots of mountain scrub brush, crushed rocks, cedary herbs, and earth. It's medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, has considerable elegance, and a great finish."

James Suckling - 92 Points
"A firm, silky red with blueberry and mineral aromas and flavors. Medium body. Fine tannins. Delicious. Quite refined style here."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 91 Points
"A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 8% Malbec, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature reveals intense notes of warm cassis, preserved plums and Black Forest cake plus hints of garrigue, cedar chest and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is delicately styled with fresh, energetic black fruits and a light chew of tannins, finishing earthy."

The Winemaker

As Chappellet’s winemaker for nearly two decades, Phillip Corallo-Titus has guided the winery’s storied winemaking program, building on Chappellet’s legacy as one of California’s preeminent producers of Cabernet Sauvignon. A gifted winemaker with a passion for experimentation, Phillip has embraced the diversity of Pritchard Hill to craft benchmark wines that authentically express the terroir-inspired complexity and character of their mountain origins.

In the winery, he handles the grapes very gently and uses an array of fermentation, maceration and cellaring techniques to accentuate and preserve the distinctiveness of each varietal. "Because I’ve worked with our vineyards for so long and know each block so intimately, I am able to focus on the individual characteristics of each vineyard lot,” says Phillip. “This diversity allows us to enjoy a great deal of freedom during the blending process, while also adding immense depth and complexity to our wines.”

The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, is a stunner and one of the great, great 2014s. Inky purple with blueberry and blackberry fruit, cassis, licorice, graphite and white flowers, the wine is stunningly concentrated, full-bodied and seemingly one of the greatest of the 2014s. Still youthful, with at least 25-30 years of upside potential at the minimum, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050. (RP) (12/2016)

This shows great structure and muscle with a firm and flexing tone. Full-bodied, tight and reserved. Currants, black truffles and espresso. A classic structure that harks back to the great Chappellets of the 1970s. Savory. What length. Will improve with many years, but it's still a dream to drink now. (1/2017)

94-97 points Vinous

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill might turn out to be better than the 2013, as it has a bit more focus, delineation and energy. Although it is quite early, the 2014 offers superb potential. The flavors are intensely mineral and savory today, while the wine possesses magical translucence and tons of personality. The sample I tasted was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, but the final wine may included blenders. Winemaker Philip Corallo-Titus adds that 2014 is a low tannin vintage at Chappellet, so the wines spent a bit longer than normal on the skins. (AG) (10/2015)
