Keenan 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Keenan 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Keenan 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Keenan’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were harvested beginning on September 10th, with the final lot being picked on September 26th. After harvest, the fruit clusters were de-stemmed, then fermented for ten to fourteen days. The wine was barrel aged in thirty-three percent new French and American oak for twenty months. The blend was assembled just before bottling. The Estate grown Cabernet imparts amazing concentration and remarkable structure, while the portion of Cabernet harvested from Pope Valley adds complex aromas and a balanced mid-palate.

James Suckling - 92 Points
"If you like things oaky, then this will appeal with its slightly bourbon-like edge of freshly sawn wood and an array of herbs and brambly red to dark fruit. The palate offers ripe plums, laced in tight with assertive wood character and hints of toffee to close. The oak needs to settle in. Try from 2022."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 90 Points
"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple colored with a plums, cassis and baked berries nose with violets, cedar, cigars and earth. The medium to full-bodied mouth is firm and grainy with decent concentration and an earthy finish."

The Story

High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation for producing wines of intense character and renowned acclaim.
