Tablas Creek 2017 Mourvedre Paso Robles

The 2017 Tablas Creek Vineyard Mourvèdre is Tablas Creek’s fourteenth varietal bottling of Mourvèdre. We use most of our Mourvèdre in our Esprit de Tablas each year. However, we feel that the Mourvèdre grape, often pigeonholed as a blending varietal, can produce remarkable varietal wines, and when we can, we try to reserve a limited quantity of particularly characteristic lots of Mourvèdre for a single-varietal bottling.

A dense red fruit nose of boysenberry, blackcurrant, new leather, and licorice. The mouth is lush without being heavy, with flavors of plum, Chinese five spice, and Mourvedre's signature roasted meat drippings. The finish shows sweet spices and youthful tannins that suggest some time in the cellar will be well rewarded. Drink any time over the next 15 years.

"Inky ruby. Vibrant black raspberry and cherry cola scents are complemented by suggestions of violet and exotic spices. Deep and fleshy on the palate, offering sweet, densely packed red and dark berry preserve and bitter chocolate flavors sweetened by a discreet floral pastille flourish. Becomes firmer with air and finishes with excellent clarity, polished tannins and strong, floral-dominated persistence."

"I loved the 2017 Mourvèdre, and Jason commented that the 2017s share some similarities to the 2005s. This medium to full-bodied, balanced red offers terrific notes of blueberries, violets, flowers, and pepper, with plenty of mineral and classic Mourvèdre savoriness."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 92 Points

"The pale to medium ruby colored 2017 Mourvèdre opens with blueberries, blackberries, black plum and cherry on the nose with graphite, dried herbs and lovely lilac and violet perfume. It’s medium-bodied with a good core of broody fruit, a firm, grainy frame and good freshness on the long, earthy finish. 950 cases produced."

Wine Enthusiast - 91 Points

"A compelling mix of turned earth and fresh plum meet with hints of tobacco and white pepper on the nose of this bottling from one of the Central Coast's Rhône pioneers. The wine is extremely floral on the palate, where violet and lavender flavors lead into cola, plum and mulberry tones."
